HIFU Q & A

For patients interested in HIFU, or high intensity focused ultrasound, for prostate cancer treatment in Manassas, VA, Dr. Guleria can be of assistance. Dr. Guleria is a leading urologist at NOVA HIFU. Discover the benefits of using HIFU for treating prostate cancer successfully.

What is HIFU?

HIFU or high intensity focused ultrasound is a form of prostate cancer treatment available at NOVA HIFU. Dr. Guleria works in partnership with HIFU Prostate Services to provide this treatment service. Using a probing device that is robotically controlled, you are given a dose of ultrasound energy in the area of the prostate cancer. This energy destroys prostatic tissue. HIFU is also known as the heat technique because of the heat that comes from the ultrasound energy. This treatment is best used for patients with low to intermediate risk, localized prostate cancer. The ultrasound energy treats the cancerous tissue without the use of radiation. The focal point of heat is extremely precise, so there is no injury to surrounding areas.  This precision allows for focal or partial gland treatment.  For patients seeking treatment for cancer that is painless and with fewer side effects, HIFU is an optimal solution.

Why Should I Consider High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound Treatments?

If you have been diagnosed with prostate cancer that is considered low risk, then you may be a candidate for HIFU. The use of high intensity focused ultrasound treatments is also beneficial for patients who are concerned about urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction. With most prostate cancer treatments, these side effects are common. However, with high intensity focused ultrasound these side effects become minimized because the therapy does not use radiation for treatment. Keep in mind that patients who have cancer that has spread to other parts of their body cannot benefit from HIFU.

What is a Typical Treatment Like With HIFU?

When you received HIFU therapy for your prostate cancer you will begin by having an ultrasound probe inserted into your rectum. This probe is monitored by robotics to ensure the proper placement and release of the ultrasound energy. Once in place, Dr. Guleria is able to beam ultrasound waves to the cancerous tissue. This treatment is done under general anesthesia in our outpatient center and requires minimal downtime. Patients do not experience pain or nausea that is associated with surgical or radiation treatments. The treatment typically takes approximately three hours to complete, or less depending upon the amount of prostate being treated.
